A quorum not being present, no official actions could be taken. Fred Padget led
an informal discussion, as follows:
Treasurer’s Report – Padget gave the report and distributed updated lists
of past officers, committee chairs, etc.
A brainstorming session for possible award winners was conducted. Suggestions
were:
- Bill Jeffers (public service)
- Ann Ennis of Keep Evansville Beautiful
- Evie the Litter Dog
- Blaine Oliver of the APC or the entire APC staff
- Mayor Weinzapfel for his green initiatives.
- UNOE staff for their assistance to WIA and to the
community.
- Joe Ballad, Jim Daniels, and the solid waste group.
- Perry Township Fire Department/Jerry Bulger.
Padget announced the Red Cross will be doing CPR and
Lifesaving classes in October.
The Vanderburgh County Humane Society is offering to neuter/spay pit bulls for
free.
Ava Nix reported there is an ATM scam involving jammed machines and skulking
people. She gave us the crime statistics and reported that the Buy-Low Pharmacy
was broken into and some drugs were stolen.
Bill Harty reported there’s nothing new, but that transportation officials
continue to ignore the needs of the west side. Discussion of other traffic and
drainage issues ensued, including the mud that washes onto Schutte Road at about
2100 and the Dan Buck project that’s muddying up Jobes Lane. Lockard opined that
the Buck development is in violation of the U & D for that property.
In a discussion of land use, Michael Lockard reported
- there was a meeting last night of the neighbors of the
proposed Majestic Place development, with approximately 60 people attending.
- It was suggested that APC require businesses
making/selling yard signs to inform customers of the posting regulations.
- There will be a march on the USI overpass on Saturday,
October 3, at 5 p.m. The hearing at the County Commission meeting is
Tuesday, October 13, and a great turnout is expected.
- Lockard met recently with INDOT about the USI overpass.
INDOT has no plans to improve the overpass at this time.
- The group has requested to be able to put a sign about
the October 13 hearing on the Fall Festival booth. The general sentiment was
against the idea.
- The strongest argument against Majestic Place remains the
poor transportation infrastructure of the area for miles in every direction.
- The rezoning at The Korner is still pending.
- Padget reported the Altstadt plumbing rezoning will be
voted on at the next commission meeting.
Paul Farmer reported the yearling candidates will be reporting
on their first year in office at the September UNOE meeting. The October meeting
will be about how to become a 501©3; November will be the annual banquet. UNOE
continues to work on the walkability project. October 7 is national
Walk-to-School Day.
Joyce Moers reported the picnic was attended by 30 adults and two children,
although there were 50 reservations. Ann Ennis was the guest speaker and talked
about the efforts to beautify the “gateway” to Evansville.
The 2010 solid waste department budget was passed and the elimination of one
position was finalized. Starting in 2010, there will be a small charge for the
specialized pick-up days such as Tox-Away and electronics recycling.
Mel Runge reported DeAnna suggested we wait until after the Fall Festival to
publish the October newsletter. Those at the meeting thought we should go ahead
with the regular schedule, or even a little earlier. He asked that we get
articles to him by Sunday, October 4.
Lockard suggested getting the restaurant equivalent of a caulking gun for the
butter and sour cream in the Fall Festival booth. He will investigate getting
some.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Cleek, Secretary
Next meeting: October 28, Red Bank Branch
Library, 4 p.m.
