Board Meeting
Wednesday, September 24, 2008

President Deanna Outlaw called the meeting to order at 4:09 p.m.

Excused: Ava Nix and Dave Rockwood
Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the July 23, 2008, meeting were approved.
Minutes for the August 27, 2008, will be submitted at a later meeting.
Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer’s report was deferred until the
September 13, 2008, picnic business meeting.
Committee Reports
- Newsletter – Padget reported
- The cost of printing the newsletter using United Neighborhoods of
Evansville (UNOE) services was $68 compared to $180 previously.
- Scholarship – Stagg reported
- Stagg is talking with a counselor at IU and as a result, has decided
to revamp the Mater Dei and Reitz scholarships application language.
- Criteria and recommendations for this year’s application will
include:
- Inserting the WIA mission statement
- Asking for letters of recommendation from school staff
- Requiring 20 hours of community service, 20 hours of service at
the high school, and personal involvement in extracurricular
activities
- Requesting the leader or supervisor’s signature as proof of
applicant participation in activities
- Requiring a grade point average of at least 2.5
- Membership – Berning reported
- Two new memberships were received at the picnic on September 13, and
several members paid dues.
- Padget said that he would be sending a reminder to those who have
not paid dues.
- On September 10, WIA had a table at USI and displayed the trifold
and a list of scholarship winners.
- On September 18, letters went to Schnucks, Buehler’s Buylow, and
westside libraries asking to display in the lobby racks information
about WIA. Berning asked that when members are in these establishments
to check for the need to replenish the flyers. If the racks need to be
refilled, let Berning know by calling 424-8307.
- Runge suggested promoting WIA at the Fall Festival.
- Jeffers (Bill) moved that WIA print a goodie map from the Westside
Nut Club’s (WSNC) Web site for promotion of WIA after receiving
permission from WSNC. Gerteisen seconded. The motion carried.
- Padget suggested that UNOE print 500 maps. Then if more maps are
needed, ask UNOE if it can print more.
- Adopt-A-Spot – Berning reported
- Runge and Berning met with Ann Ennis, Keep Evansville Beautiful (KEB),
to discuss the broader view of the corner at Maryland and St. Joe.
- The awards luncheon is October 21.
- Picnic – Moers reported
- Seventy-two people attended the Annual Membership Picnic on
Saturday, September 13, 2008.
- The picnic was a success with plenty of fellowship, good food, and
speaker Representative Brad Ellsworth.
- Thank you notes will be sent to Ellsworth, RC Cola, and Burdette
Park.
- Land Use – Fred Padget reported
- A previous service station located at 5001 New Harmony Road is
requesting to change from commercial, C-4, to manufacturing, M-1, with a
Use and Development Commitment. This property is at New Harmony and
Detroy Roads. The property has been vacant for about four years. The
owner, RCR Westside Holdings, LLC, want to use the property to restore
classic cars.
- A parcel (portion of Lot 17) of an existing subdivision on the east
side of Boehne Camp Road, south of Pearl Drive and bordering the Copper
Creek Apartments is being requested to change from R1 to C4. This change
would bring this parcel into conformance with the rest of the
subdivision and allow commercial development.
- Moers asked if anyone has information about the future of the old
Marathon station at the corner of Harmony Way and Middle Mt. Vernon
Road.
- Transportation – Bill Harty reported he attended the Safety Board
meeting and the following points of interest were discussed:
- Five-point intersection at Tekoppel
- Railroad spur on Ohio Street
- Harty ask the police to come up with a plan for wrecks occurring on
the Lloyd. Harty noted that the Police Chief Brad Hill was very
responsive.
- Fall Festival – Outlaw reported reported
- Outlaw reported that the booth has a new breaker box for electric
skillets.
- The lemon shakeups will contain simple syrup instead of granulated
sugar.
- A new item on the menu will be fried cheese balls.
- The booth has been redesigned to contain a pop out section to hold
the coolers for the baked potatoes.
Announcements
- Candidates’ Night is Thursday, September 25, 6 p.m., at the Red Cross
Center.
- The United Neighborhoods of Evansville (UNOE) Sparkplug Banquet will be
held on October 30, at the Scottish Rite. WIA members’ cost will be $10.
- Wentzel motioned and Gerteisen seconded that WIA pay $20 to put a
business card size ad in the Spark Plug Banquet booklet. The motion carried.
- Concerning the Shirley James Memorial on the Greenway—Fred Padget
presented an artist’s rendition, which was already approved by the Parks
Board and Arts Council. The Mayor approved the southwest corner of Fulton
and the Lloyd for the memorial location.
- CSX bridge closest to river will be part of the memorial.
Next Meeting
The next Board meeting on October 22 at 4 p.m. will be held at Red Bank Library.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m.
