Westside Youth Soccer Club: John Pease, President of the Westside Youth Soccer Club reports, “The picnic that Westside Youth Soccer had for the younger soccer players was a success. We had competition games for the kids to play and hotdogs to eat for them and their families. They left the park with smiles on their faces to close the season.

We had help from some area businesses. Dewigs from Haubstat helped by giving us a deal on hotdogs, Schnucks helped with a deal on hotdog buns. Buehler’s Buy-Low donated ketchup and mustard. Lowes and Home Depot donated building kits to keep siblings busy. We gave coupons to all of the children, from pizza parties to ice cream cones. The coupons were donated by Godfathers North Park, Pizza Hut St. Joe. Ave. and Lloyd Expressway, McDonalds at St. Joe Ave., G. D. Ritzi’s, and Dairy Queen Lloyd Expressway.

The Westside Youth Soccer of Evansville would like to thank these local businesses for their support in rewarding these young children in their effort in good fun.”

More on the Westside Youth Soccer Club: THANKS MAYOR LLOYD. Mayor Lloyd and Tom Shetler made a trip west to check on the needs of Moutoux Park. President Pease and several members of the Club made an excellent presentation to the mayor. The group made the following points:

• The group primarily provides soccer recreational opportunities for young children.
• They support the East Side soccer facility and feel they could serve as a feeder group to that organization.
• They could also offer facilities for west side schools that do not have fields.
• The major problem at the park is drainage. Their first priority is “dry fields”.
• Other problems are lack of parking spaces, poor lighting, and vandalism.
• The Club also would like to expand into an area that is zoned for agriculture.
• Members of the organization would provide manpower and some money to supplement anything the city could do to improve the facility.
• Finally, they are very happy the EVANSVILLE PARKS FOUNDATION is providing a playground for the children. The facility is being built from funds provided in Bill Moutoux’s will. The Foundation will raise the playground one foot in order to “stay dry”. THANKS PARKS FOUNDATION.

Howell Wetlands: For just $5.00 you can get the new Howell Wetlands Herald. Wetlands Curator, Kristan Moran, is publishing The newsletter is extremely informative and will be published quarterly. Kristan has also established a website with several interesting links. The address is http://www.howellwetlands.org. If you wish to receive the newsletter contact Kristin at the following address: Howell Wetlands, P. O. Box 6544, Evansville, IN 47719.

Kristan reports the beaver issue is close to being resolved. It appears they will have to remove the particular tree that is a food source for the beaver. This will force the animals to move further down into the wetlands.

The Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage: The Pigeon Creek Greenway Passage Advisory Board announced their Public Safety and Security Program for the Greenway Passage. The field office at 801 Uhlhorn will serve as a Weed and Seed Safe Haven facility. Emergency call boxes are being installed at each trailhead. The Police Dept. announced their plans for utilizing the bicycle patrol on the Greenway Passage, and the Fire Dept. discussed their plans for water rescue and help during medical emergencies.

Glenn Boberg announced a reward program for anyone caught vandalizing the constructed trail and the riverfront esplanade. The Greenway Advisory Board will reward an individual or individuals who provides information leading to the arrest and prosecution of a person who has committed a crime or act of vandalism along the Greenway Passage or Riverfront Esplanade. The amount of any reward is in the sole discretion of the Greenway Board, but in no event will any reward or rewards exceed the amount of $500 per individual.

The Trail Monitor Plan and the Jr. Park Ranger Plan was outlined by VISTA volunteer Jane Schmadel.

If you are wondering what all the construction is on the Riverfront, it is another portion of the Greenway Passage. Our riverfront will be glorious.

Shirley James, Chair
