MINUTES:
Moutoux Park: John Pease reported they had not heard from the mayor in regard to
his recent visit. Shirley James indicated she had talked to the mayor and he
said he was discussing some improvements with Mike Madriaga. She also suggested
a letter be sent to the mayor as a follow-up. In the meantime the Westside Youth
Soccer Club is making plans for some improvements.
• They would like to landscape around the new park sign. Doris Eicher indicated
she would be willing to help them with a design.
• Vandals that had done $5,000 worth of damage to the soccer fields have been
apprehended. The Parks Department plans to prosecute.
• The club would like to put up a flagpole.
• They would like to move the Bill Moutoux monument to a more prominent spot.
They plan to consult with the Parks Board and the family before doing anything.
• Terry Poag reported they should have the playground equipment by the end of
the month. The contributor that was going to give them fill backed out of the
commitment. Poag is searching for a new source.
• Pease indicated the club would like a clean survey of the east side of the
field.
New West Side Park: Glenn Boberg announced the Marine Hospital site was no
longer available. Apparently Mead Johnson decided to sell the property to
another buyer. One of the other sites has been purchased by Fifth Third Bank. He
will keep us informed.
Howell Outdoor Wetland Education Center: Shirley James reported that during the
ECO Tour the Indiana Society of Herpetologists discovered the wetland is home to
a species of frog that is not known to exist anywhere else in Indiana. The frog
is known as a green tree frog. It is small, but mighty. It can leap great
distances.
Burdette Park: There was considerable discussion on the Burdette Park Master
Plan. The following comments will be forwarded to the Corradino Group:
• Members liked the idea of restoring the WPA facilities but wanted to know more
about the amphitheater.
• It was suggested the park co-partner with the Historical Society on the WPA
restoration.
• Members didn’t think we needed another indoor ice rink, but thought an outdoor
rink would be an attraction that would help the park through the winter season.
• They liked the improvements to the chalets and said the park needed to be
marketed more.
• They questioned whether a roller rink would be as popular now with roller
blading being the sport of the moment.
• Members did not expect the park to make money. They felt fees should be kept a
reasonable rate so poorer families would be able to enjoy some of the benefits.
Since some members have not been able to come to the meetings because the date
conflicted with other events, it was decided to change the Parks Committee
meetings to the third Thursday of the month. Our next meeting will be July 17th
at the Greenway Passage Field Office at 801 Uhlhorn St.
Respectfully submitted,
Shirley W. James, Chair
WIA Parks Committee
