Attending: Basden, Bill; Basden, Marge; Bequette, Steve; Bernhardt, Wayne;
Berning, Dot; Chapman, Kurt; Cleek, Linda; Farmer, Paul; Harty, Bill; Kolb, Bonnie;
Musgrave, Shelby; Padget, Fred; Poag, Terry; Sensmeier, Bernice; Thompson, George;
Wallenmeyer, Loretta; White, Martha
Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the July and September board meetings were approved by consensus.
Treasurer’s Report: Bernice Sensmeier presented the September report. The current number of paid members is 185. Not all bills from the Fall Festival have been finalized.
Annual Meeting: The annual meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 14, at the Old Mill Restaurant. There will be a social time beginning at 6 with a buffet dinner to be served at 6:45. The cost to the organization will be $10.50 per person (including tax and tip) and we will charge $11 per person. Reservations are to be made by calling Farmer or
Sensmeier. A reservation deadline of November 10 will be advertised.
The following awards will be presented:
• Governmental Excellence – Barbara Cunningham, outgoing executive director of the Area Plan Commission (nominated by George Thompson, seconded by Shelby
Musgrave)
• Environmental Excellence – the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office for its work in code enforcement (nominated by Linda Cleek, seconded by Marge
Basden)
• Board Member of the Year – to be selected by the President
• No awards for Historic Preservation or Neighborhood Association will be presented this year
Flag pins were selected as table favors; Marge Basden will take care of getting them. Farmer will take care of getting centerpieces and a speaker.
Nominating Committee: Reports were distributed by Musgrave and Loretta
Wallenmeyer. (See attached copy.) The nominations were accepted by the board without opposition beyond an expression of concern that some board members seldom attend meetings. Since the new by-laws allow for other meeting times, that issue may disappear on its own in 2002.
Senior Vice President’s Report: Fred Padget expressed thanks from Bonnie Kolb and himself for the hard work of all those who helped make the Fall Festival booth a success. He reported that WIA continues to support the efforts of neighbors opposing commercial and high density residential development at the corner of the Lloyd Expressway and Schutte Road.
Police & Sheriff’s Reports: Kurt Chapman reported that crime is down overall but that break-ins are up. There have been problems reported around a nightclub (The Zone) on Claremont Avenue. These include litter, noise, heavy traffic, etc. Steve Bequette reported that a meth lab was discovered and shut down on Old Henderson Road.
Fall Festival Committee: Kolb reported that gross income is up about $500 above 2000. A complete financial report will be available next month. She thanked
Padget, Cleek, Thompson, Sensmeier, and Bill Basden particularly for their efforts.
Traffic Reports were distributed.
Parks Committee Report:
• Farmer reported that the David Dale Owen Land Trust is some time away from gaining 501 (c) 3 status and therefore not in a position to accept the offered land in the Western Terrace neighborhood. Padget moved and Sensmeier seconded that any WIA action to purchase the land be tabled until such time as the Owen Trust is able to take ownership of the property.
• The Parks Committee is investigating litter complaints, drainage problems, and lack of maintenance at the Dogtown boat ramp.
The Board approved sending a letter to Mike Madriaga at the Parks
Department requesting an update on the status of the Dogtown site.
• Burdette Park was selected as having the best pool and tied for best place to take children in a local media poll.
Web Site/Media: Cleek reported that updates to the web site continue. Everyone was again reminded that ideas for the newsletter and the web site are welcome.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Linda Cleek
Secretary
Next meeting: Wednesday, November 14, 6 p.m. at the Old Mill Restaurant
