Program: Amos Morris, Zoo director, presented a short program about Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Gardens and answered questions from the Association. Paul Bouseman, Botanical Curator, then led a tour of Amazonia which was thoroughly enjoyed by all present.

Business Meeting: President DeAnna Outlaw called the meeting to order at 8 p.m.

Minutes: Minutes of the November general meeting were approved on a motion by Paul Farmer & second by Bill Jeffers.

Treasurer’s Report: Fred Padget presented the report. He also offered copies of the membership list distributed at the February board meeting to anyone interested.

Committee Reports:

  • Adopt-a-Spot – Dot Berning: The Westside Nut Club will clean the stone gates and the bronze plaques and repair the wall, making the garden a little late going in this year, but not as late as last year. Janice Farmer asked if there is any chance of getting rid of the encroaching ball diamond. Ann Ennis, director of Keep Evansville Beautiful, is in favor of it, but she and Berning agree that beautifying the corner is the first concern. Berning and others will meet with City Councilman BJ Watts re progress w/the city.

  • Newsletter - Mel Runge: Submissions are always welcome. The group is glad the newsletter is coming out earlier in the month. Linda Cleek mentioned the possibility of a Facebook page for WIA, and suggested it could be a project for some of our younger board members. After some discussion, and the fact that between the two of them, Cleek and Padget have 48 hours Facebook experience, there will be further investigation.

  • Solid Waste - Paul Farmer: The February recycling day on the west side had the highest volume ever. They are picking up there just about every month now. Wesselman Woods is running all the pick-up sites now. One of the County Commissioners would like to charge a fee for the pick-up, but most believe many wouldn’t recycle if they had to pay to do it. The tree trash mulch is being used to cover trash at the landfill, which is good, because they don’t then have to use topsoil.

  • UNOE – Farmer reported the next general meeting is Thursday, March 26, 6 p.m., at the Red Cross Center. Evie the trash-picking, book-writing dog will present the program.

  • Transportation – no report

  • Environment – in the absence of Dave Rockwood, Outlaw reported on the Alcoa anti-litter grant. The money can be used to feed kids who participate in a cleanup, and for supplies such as trash bags, gloves, etc. They may do a clean-up day along Mesker Park Drive. Outlaw will contact some churches, schools, etc., and is thinking it will be the last Saturday in April. Farmer said we might be able to get a little additional money. Wayne Gerteisen said the area just north of the Red Bank Library is a real mess, but would be very difficult to clean, what with traffic, etc.

  • West Sector Police – Ava Nix reported the meeting is going on simultaneously with our meeting. The new CPO for Beat One is Josh Wittmer. Joe Dickinson, the previous CPO, has been promoted to detective.

  • Land Use - Fred Padget: Ramsey Corporation, the company seeking to build a healthcare campus just off the intersection of the Lloyd Expressway and University Parkway, is going to the Board of Zoning Appeals to ask for less than normal parking, given the nature of their business. They are also seeking approval for a privacy fence between that property and the neighbors. Majestic Place is not yet scheduled for reappearance at the Area Plan Commission, and may be a couple of months away from coming back up. Fred met with Joe Kiefer & other officials to list the problems we believe would result from the project. Fred credited Bill Jeffers with bringing a lot of the low-impact develop protocols to their attention.

  • Fall Festival – Outlaw discussed last year’s remodeling in the booth and promised a little more for this year.

Old Business: – none

New Business: – none

Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:47 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Linda Cleek, Secretary

Next general meeting – May 21, location TBA
