Board Meeting

President Linda Cleek called the meeting to order at 4 p.m.

Guest Speaker: Chief Deputy Eric Williams and Sergeant Scott Molden from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Department

Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the April 26, 2006, meeting were deferred until the July 26, 2006, meeting.

Treasurer’s Report: Fred Padget presented the treasurer’s report for the month of May 2006. Padget also passed out a table showing schedule of investments as of May 31, 2006. He also reported that WIA has collected dues from 46 members and the membership list shows 193 members.

Sheriff’s Department Representative to WIA: Sergeant Scott Molden will act as the WIA’s compliance officer and address quality of life issues. He asked the Board for ideas and discussed abandoned vehicles enforcement, animal control, and trash dumping. Sergeant Molden said to contact him at the command post at 435-5714, ext. 226 or smolden@vanderburghsheriff.com.

Announcements and Comments

  •  Padget reported that Smart Growth is a new group interested in land use issues and protection of natural assets. Its Comprehensive Plan includes many goals and objectives for the area beyond planned development and associated zoning. The group's next meeting is on July 12 at 11:30 a.m. at Central Library.

President’s Announcements

  • Free admission to the July 9 Otters game when fans present a 35 gallon trash bag full of aluminum cans.
  • State Agency Directory, 2006-2007, available for $6 each
  • Community Collaborative Rain Hail and Snow Network is offering a workshop for people interested in becoming rain gage reporters. The workshop will take place on July 20 at 7 p.m. at Central Library, Browning Room B.

Old Business

  • Farmer discussed WIA’s upcoming Candidates Night schedule for Monday, September 11, at the Korner. Farm reported that there are 30 potential candidates. Farmer talked about the possibility of unopposed candidates not speaking.
  • Jeffers said that all candidates should be invited and unopposed candidates should be introduced.
  • Cleek said that WIA would introduce the unopposed candidates.
  • Board members discussed scheduling another evening for school board candidates, possibly co-sponsoring the event with Farm Bureau.

Committee Reports

  • UNOE – Farmer reported
    • On Thursday, June 22, UNOE meeting will host Roger Lehman, Building Commissioner, and Greg Bryant, Code Enforcement Officer, with Department of Metropolitan Development.
    • Gail Rieken, Parks Department Director, will speak at the July 27 meeting.
    • Candidates’ Night will be held in September.
    • October is School Board Candidates’ Night.

  • Land Use – Padget reported
    • The Area Plan Commission (APC) voted to recommend that the vacant Risley’s store at 2233 West Franklin Street be zoned from Commercial C-4 to Commercial C-2.
    • Mayes Farm Market on St. Joseph Avenue received recommendation from APC to be rezoned from Agriculture to Commercial C-2 with a Use and Development Commitment. The County Commissioners approved this petition on May 16. Mayes also received a zoning variance to continue with a gravel parking lot. The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) approved this request on May 18.
    • The developer of the 9.8 acres at 5300 Woodhaven Drive (northwest corner of Route 66 (Diamond) and Route 65) has asked APC for a
      two-month continuance to provide time to meet with neighbors.
    • Another request at the May APC meeting was to rezone 3117 Broadway from Commercial C-4 to Residential R-2.
    • Mater Dei Friends of Alumni Association requested from BZA a variance to install a 106-space parking lot at 1336 New Harmony Road. The request was approved.
    • APC also heard in May a request that a minor subdivision of 7.8 acres at Fischer and Kissel Roads be split into two lots.
  • Transportation – Hardy reported
    • St. Joseph Avenue project is moving forward.
  • National Night Out – Stagg reported
    • Carolyn Stagg and Sam Wenzel will co-chair this year’s booth activities.
    • The Chairs and Co-Chairs for the East, South, and West Sectors won a float award at the Freedom Festival Parade on Jun 24.
  • Web site – no report
  • WAVE (Water Awareness for the Vanderburgh Environment) – Jeffers reported
    • WAVE inserted its winter 2006 newsletter in UNOE’s April newsletter mailing, which reached some 325 recipients.
    • WAVE will be working with SWCD (Soil and Water Conservation District) and any other organizations that want to get involved in working on an education and outreach 319 Grant used for water quality awareness.
    • WAVE would like to continue its water testing at Carpentier Creek on Broadway.

Next Meeting
The next Board meeting on July 26 at 4 p.m. will be held at Red Bank Library.
