CRIME PREVENTION OFFICERS: Kurt Chapman -Beat 1, Sergeant Thompson (Scott Hurt was out-of-town) - Beat 2, Randy Rolley -Beat 3, Kent Walker Beat 5,  Bill Braun -Beat 4 & 6.  Stats from June 2002, comparable to the same timeframe June 2001 were reported, with the last four months comparison. There will be a map displayed of the new boundaries for the West Sector at the August meeting.

NEW BUSINESS:  Deputy Chief Reed requested community effort in notifying our State Legislature about controlling the sale of fireworks.  With the illegal sales of fireworks in Indiana, it makes law enforcement impossible.

OLD BUSINESS:

COMMUNITY SWEEP - Lieutenant Weber stated that Jacobsville, CHAIN, and part of STAR Neighborhoods were completed.  The next area will be Diamond/Stringtown.  Focus on all the west sector neighborhoods will be done, trying to complete all areas, although some areas are not as critical as others.

Abandoned vehicles are done year round by calling the Abandoned Vehicle Unit at 436-7938.  Voice message may be left with locations and description of vehicle.

WEED & SEED GRAFFITI PROJECT - Kent Walker reported that a pilot program was initiated in the W&S areas.  A slide presentation of  the group painting buildings at their first graffiti sweep was viewed with the before and after.   The sweep was very successful, other individuals approached us, requesting help on neighboring areas. There were around fifteen residence that reported graffiti, and had signed a liability waiver allowing us to paint over the graffiti. We actually ended up doing nineteen buildings by the end of the day.  With this project, we hope that a city-wide program will evolve in efforts to clean up the community.

RAILROAD TRACKS - Geneva Hughes mentioned that the tracks on Stringtown and Garvin were discussed at the  January Citizen's Meeting.  Roger Hempfling, CSX, was at that meeting and he would try to get the tracks repaired.  The tracks were never repaired, and with increased traffic flow the tracks are worse.  Janet James added the tracks on Claremont and Barker are protruding above the street pavement, making it very dangerous for motorist.  Lt. Weber will contact Mr. Hempfling regarding these tracks and ask him to attend the August meeting.

 SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS:

OHIO STREET WARNING LIGHT - No progress reported.

 VIAL OF LIFE:  No report.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT - Bud requested information about the grant money from United Way.

Linda Jones reported that Weed & Seed was approached. Since W&S was not an agency already affiliated with United Way, she collaborated with the Youth Bureau Agency to assist in getting a grant for all three sector offices.  A grant for $4,000.00 was received and would be divided among the three sectors for NNO expenses.

CONGRATULATIONS to our Neighborhood Associations and all the supporters for a very successful National Night Out.  Everyone participating this year should be very proud for a job well done.

WE THANK YOU ALL, this would not have happened without everyone support and joining together in making this the best event ever for the West Sector Community.

THE NEXT MEETING WILL BE AT THE WEST POLICE OFFICE
ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2002.
