President Fred Padget called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m.

The meeting began with introductions by the members of the 2004 Board of Directors.

Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the October meeting were approved on a motion by Paul Farmer and second by Shirley James.

Treasurer’s Report: Bernice Sensmeier presented the end-of-year figures for 2003.  The closing balance was $29,831.33, down from $31,818.06 at the end of 2002.

President’s Report:  A written report (posted on the WIA Web site) was distributed.  Additionally, Padget reported:

·        Troy Tornatta will be the Vanderburgh County Council liaison to WIA.

·        Kenny Kent car dealerships will make contributions to not-for-profit organizations when their members purchase cars there.  Proof of membership is required.

·        Recycle Day will be held on Saturday, February 7, at the Westside Wal-Mart.

·        The Citizens’ Advisory Committee to the INDOT study of improvements on 62 West met on January 27 to present preliminary plans.  A public meeting will be held at Reitz High School on Thursday, February 26, at 6 p.m.

Announcements

·        Betty Baumgartner announced a free mammogram program sponsored by Deaconess Hospital.  More information is available at

·        Brenda Jeffers reported a new organization called WAVE (Water Awareness for the Vanderburgh Environment) is being formed to educate the citizens of Vanderburgh County, particularly schools and neighborhood associations, about water pollution prevention.

·        James reported the Evansville Parks Department will replaced the broken wall (hit by a vehicle) at Westside Nut Club Park.

Law Enforcement

·        Padget attended the January West Sector meeting and reported the long-awaited train-on-track warning light for Ohio Street traffic is still in the planning stage.

·        The West Sector Community Police Officers (CPOs) are planning programs to be available to community groups including neighborhood associations.

Action Items

·        Board meeting schedule for 2004 – James moved that the current schedule—4th Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Red Bank Branch Library—be retained for 2004.  George Thompson seconded the motion which passed without opposition.

·        UNOE dues for 2004 are $20.  Sam Wentzel moved that WIA again be a dues paying member.  James seconded the motion; passed without opposition.

Committee Reports – due to other agenda items no committee reports were made.  The Parks Committee reported was submitted in writing.

Guest Presentations

·        John Pease and Gino Gott of the Westside Youth Soccer League made a presentation on the work completed and still to be done at Moutoux Park.  Because of the change of city administration the next steps by the Parks Department are uncertain at this time.

·        Members of Ohio Valley Common Ground, a group dedicated to educating the public about environmental health risks, were present.  Jeff Seyler, PhD, a chemistry professor at the University of Southern Indiana, made a presentation on the health effects of air pollution.  The presentation may be viewed on the WIA Web site.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
