General Meeting
Thursday, February 17, 2005
Mesker Park Zoo
President Fred Padget called the meeting to order at 7:11 p.m.

Secretary’s Report: Minutes of the August 2004 meeting were approved.
Treasurer’s Report: Bernice Sensmeier presented the treasurer’s report.
Associations – Announcements and Comments

Carolyn Stagg announced that Hilltop is meeting
Tuesday, February 22, at the Golden Corral.

Dot Berning announced that Mt. Auburn will have a
dinner meeting at Tumbleweed on Thursday, February 24, at 6 p.m.

Shirley James announced the Ohio River Sweep on June
18 and “Evening on the River,” June 10. The June 10 event is a fundraiser
for the Greenway.

Linda Cleek announced that on the first Saturday in
August the Wabash Paddle Fest will take place. People will start at
Grayville, Illinois, and paddle down to New Harmony. Canoe Evansville will
be a partner in this event.

Linda Cleek announced that the August General Meeting
will feature USI “movers and shakers,” who will discuss the USI master plan
and changes that will occur in the next few years.
New Business
Steve McCallister needs four or more 4-drawer file cabinets. He has to move the
WIA newsletter files to a different location by the end of March. Dot Berning
said that Willard Library will take some of the files but not all of them. Linda
Cleek responded that Willard will take the files; they just need to be
organized. Carolyn Stagg wondered if some of the files, such as studies and
documents from the onset of WIA, could be recorded to microfiche. Fred Padget
said WIA is getting a committee together between now and March to go through the
files.
Program
Dot Berning introduced Erik Beck, General Curator, Mesker Park Zoo. Erik
presented a program, “New at the Zoo.” He discussed the proposed Zoo
improvements made possible from a bond. Some of the highlights of these
improvements include: Amazonian and front entrance complex, Veterinarian
complex, greenhouse, Lake Victoria erosion control project. The timeline for
these projects is 2003-2007. Erick also showed a slide presentation highlighting
the Veterinarian complex and its procedures for animal quarantine. The program
ended with an active question and answer session.
President’s Report

Shelby Musgrave volunteered to be on the Nominating
Committee.

Brenda Jeffers said she would chair the National Night
Out Committee.

Fred Padget said we need volunteers; and if anyone
would like to participate, contact him.

Meet Your Legislators will hold four forums at the C.
K. Newsome Center on Saturdays—February 19, March 12, April 2, and April 23,
at 10 a.m. Reservations are needed to speak.

Tox-A-Way day is held every month at the Laubscher
Landfill. The charge is $1 per ton.

Tire Amnesty day will take place Saturday, May 21, 8
a.m.-12 noon.

County Commissioners Input Meeting (concerning road
repairs) will meet Mondays, February 7, 14, and 21 at 4:30 p.m.—locations to
be announced; WIA can put together a list of roads that need work to present
at the meeting.

Public meeting of the Federal Highway Administration
and Transit System addressing the planning process of Evansville Urban
Transit Study (EUTS) will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 5 p.m., at the Civic
Center Room 307.

Paul Farmer, Chairman of United Neighborhoods of
Evansville (UNOE), in conjunction with the Department of Metropolitan
Development, is working on a faith-based initiative program. This program
needs volunteers. This initiative will set up a database to match volunteers
with the people who need work done.

The study group for the city/county unification has
put together a proposal. The timeline includes: public hearing in April;
referendum vote in November 2006; primary and general election of officials
in 2007; if passed, Metropolitan Government starts 2008.

Canoe Evansville is working on cleaning up Pigeon
Creek for the Canoe Adventure Trip.

Westside soccer group is under new administration.
Renovations are ready to begin at Moutoux Park.

USI will add an additional entrance on Broadway.
This work has not started and is still some time in the future.

County Commissioners are supplying the tie-in for
the hiking and bicycle path between USI and Burdette Park.
-
The developer of the apartment complex at Boehne Camp
Road has agreed to give 15 feet to the Greenway.

Land Use Planning – Padget reported
-
Welborn is building a medical facility on Boehne Camp
Road. The ground breaking ceremony is February 23.
-
The apartment complex on Boehne Camp Road is working
with Welborn to fix an entrance problem. They may agree to a common
entrance.

Dennis Owens has requested a change in zoning at 25
Dorothy Drive from warehouse and office building to commercial business.

Mead Johnson wants to replace the Old Marine Hospital
(West Illinois Street) with a warehouse.
Other Business
Linda Cleek expressed her concern about why more WIA members did
not attend tonight’s program. Linda said that the event was well advertised.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
