The Evansville Urban Transportation Study (EUTS) recently published the “City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County Intersection Crash Analysis”. The was done, as quoted from the booklet, “with the aim of identifying crash intersection locations and determining safety improvement recommendations for intersections in the City of Evansville and Vanderburgh County…recommendations focus on both short and long term remedies to improve both safety and efficiency. The results will also establish a platform for future evaluation of the intersections to review the effectiveness of roadway improvements implemented through this study.”

The highest crash rate location in the area represented by the WIA was at the Boonville New Harmony Road & State Route 65 intersection with a crash rate of 4.05 and a severity rate of 2.03. This was the highest severity rate of any intersection reported and the second highest crash rate of any county intersection reported. The highest crash rate for county intersections was Boonville New Harmony Road and State Route 57 at 4.06.

Crash rates represent the number of crashes that are expected to occur for every one million vehicles that enter the intersection. Severity rates represent the number of injury and/or fatal crashes that are expected to occur for every one million vehicles that enter the intersection. The expected occurrences are extrapolations from statistical data based on actual occurrences.

Other west side county intersections of concern are the Diamond Avenue and St. Joseph Avenue intersection with a crash rate of 1.88 and State Route 62 and Boehne Camp Road intersection with a crash rate of 1.71. These were the 6th and 9th worst intersections in the county, respectively.

The very worst crash rate intersection was Vine and NW 3rd in the city with a rate of 5.64

Lloyd Expressway and South Barker had a crash rate of .77 and State Route 62 and Eichoff Road .72. I was surprised Lloyd and Rosenberger or Lloyd and Red Bank didn’t make the list. The Red Bank intersection may have had the statistics split between county and city because the city/county line runs though the intersection.

There is much more detailed information in the study and it is available from EUTS. I also have a complete copy if you are interested in further information.

Monthly statistics on accidents on the Lloyd for the city and county are posted elsewhere on this Web site, as is a section on where you are most at risk on the Lloyd Expressway.
