Our annual awards banquet and general meeting was held at USI on Thursday, November 15. If you weren’t there, you missed an outstanding address by Mizell Stewart III, editor of the Evansville Courier & Press. Mr. Stewart spoke on "community patriotism," defined as taking responsibility for one's own street, neighborhood, or community. The winner of the $1,000 Paul Harper Scholarship was Karen Scheller, a senior at Mater Dei High School. Heather Pearce, won the $1,000 Farmer Family Scholarship. Heather is a senior at Reitz High School. We wish both these fine young women every success in their academic endeavors and future careers.
An award was presented to the west side Pet Food Center for their service to WIA by allowing us to use their water supply and parking lot at each Fall Festival. Beverly Behme, who recently retired as Zoning Administrator for the Area Plan Commission, was honored for her service to the community. DeAnna Outlaw, president, and Dot Berning, Adopt-a-Spot chair, were given Green Awards for Beautification for their tireless efforts on the Adopt-a-Spot project. The corner of St. Joe and Maryland was truly blooming earlier this year. See the President's Report (below) for pictures of the spot. For the first time ever, a Golden Spud Award was given for service above and beyond the call of duty during the Fall Festival. Phillip Outlaw is the worthy recipient but, as DeAnna pointed out, although living with her during Fall Festival week certainly added to his heroic performance, future winners are not required to be married to the Fall Festival Chairman!
Board Members at Large for 2008 were also elected:
Other business included presentation of the treasurer's report by Fred Padget
and a report from president DeAnna Outlaw. A copy of DeAnna's presentation
