| Dona Bergman, executive director of the Evansville
Environmental Protection Association, was presented an Award of Excellence
for her energetic enforcement of environmental standards in and around
Evansville. She was nominated by Bill Harty. Steve Craig, manager
of Burdette Park, received an Award of Excellence for his diligent work in
developing and improving Burdette Park. In his acceptance, Steve
graciously shared the award with all the park staff, including WIA board
member Joyce Moers. Dot Berning nominated Steve.
Robert Ruble, USI's Vice President of Business Affairs, received an
Award of Excellence for his efforts in maintaining the wooded beauty of
the rapidly-growing campus. He was nominated by USI's Student
Government representative to the WIA board, Troy Nethery.
Each year the WIA selects an Outstanding Board Member. Past selections
have included many exceptional board members and this year was no
exception. For many reasons, including her service as membership
secretary, call committee chair, and parks committee member, and
especially for her conception and implementation of a membership picnic,
Dot Berning was selected as the WIA
Outstanding Board Member for 2004.
Four individuals who were founding members of the Westside Improvement
Association and who continue to serve on the board of directors in 2004
were recognized with Pioneer Awards. They are Doris Eicher, who has
also been active in the Westwood Garden Club and Wabash Avenue of Flags;
Bill Harty, past WIA president and chair of several committees; Shirley
James, past president and community activitist extraordinaire; and Bonnie
Kolb, long-serving chair of the Fall Festival committee. Thanks
bunches to all four! All of the award winners are very special people doing exceptional
things. We appreciate their efforts and the community is better because of
their efforts.
