Award Winners for 2003

Paul Bouseman was presented an Award of Excellence in recognition of his outstanding work in beautification and landscaping at Mesker Park Zoo and Botanical Gardens. This work was done with a special concern for water quality, prevention of soil erosion and a deep concern for the environment. If you have not visited the Mesker Park Zoo in a while, you will be pleasantly surprised with the work already done and how great the zoo looks. This is a great asset for the area.  Bouseman was nominated by Dot Berning, who presented his award.

Rick Obenshain was also presented an Award of Excellence for his contribution to our environment though his work for improved water quality, erosion control and watershed studies. In particular his study of the Pigeon Creek Highland Watershed, along with other work he’s accomplished, will provide valuable information into the future for a large part of this area.  Shirley James presented the award to Obenshain.

WIA provides two scholarships each year for an outstanding student from each of the West Side High Schools. This years Paul Harper Scholarship was presented to Derek Herrmann from Mater Dei High School and the Farmer Family Scholarship was presented to Breanna Herschelman from F. J. Reitz High School. Both of these individuals are outstanding students from the respective schools not only in academics but in extracurricular activities and in their daily lives. George Thompson  was Chair of the Scholarship Selection Committee.

Each year the WIA selects an Outstanding Board Member. Past selections have included many exceptional board members and this year was no exception. For many reasons, including his valuable support of the WIA in many ways and his involvement in a vast amount of other civic activities, but especially for his hard work and determination in assuring three acres of old growth woodlands would be preserved as a nature preserve in the Western Terrace Neighborhood, Sam Wentzel was selected as the WIA Outstanding Board Member for 2003.

All of the award winners are very special people doing exceptional things. We appreciate their efforts and the community is better because of their efforts.
